Olympic Qualifiers/Women’s Football: Cameroon ready for qualification
The Cameroon women’s national team, the Indomitable Lionesses, are currently in full preparation mode in Yaoundé ahead of their crucial double confrontation against Zambia for the 5th and 6th days of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games qualifiers. These two-legged matches, scheduled for March 5th in Yaoundé and March 10th in Zambia, will determine whether Cameroon secures a spot at the Tokyo Olympics in Japan.
Since February 20th, the Lionesses have been in training camp, focusing on tactical and physical preparation. Head coach Alain Djeumfa emphasized the importance of the upcoming home leg, stating that the team is concentrating on offensive strategies to maximize goal-scoring opportunities. “Right now we are working on how to counter the opponent to score as many goals as possible. It’s a home game and we have to focus on attack and offensive play,” he said, highlighting the team’s proactive approach.
Djeumfa is well aware of Zambia’s strengths, describing them as a technically proficient side capable of posing serious challenges. Nevertheless, he expressed confidence in Cameroon’s preparation and tactical plan. “It will be a very big match. The Zambian team is a good team that plays good football. We have been able to have everything we need to prepare for this match. All that remains is for us to put together our strategy to face this opponent,” Djeumfa added.
The Indomitable Lionesses are determined to leverage the home advantage in Yaoundé, aiming to secure a decisive lead before the return leg in Zambia. The training sessions have been focused not only on refining attacking patterns but also on defensive organization to minimize risks against a skilled Zambian side. Djeumfa has stressed the importance of discipline, teamwork, and exploiting set-piece opportunities as key components of his strategy.
Beyond tactical work, the training camp has been designed to build cohesion among the players, many of whom are familiar with each other from domestic and continental competitions. The coach is relying on a mix of experience and youthful energy to navigate the high-pressure environment of Olympic qualifiers. Every session is meticulously planned to simulate match conditions, ensuring that the players are physically and mentally ready for both legs.
Securing qualification for Tokyo 2020 would be a historic achievement for Cameroon’s women’s team, reinforcing their status as one of Africa’s leading sides. The players and coaching staff are fully aware that the margin for error is minimal, and they are leaving nothing to chance in their preparation.
With the first leg in Yaoundé fast approaching, anticipation is high among fans and the football community. Cameroon’s strategy will hinge on an aggressive yet balanced approach, combining attacking intent with tactical discipline, aiming to achieve a favorable result at home and take a step closer to the Olympic Games.
