Olwethu Makhanya in club v country row as defender refuses to return to Philadelphia Union over blocked Europe move

South Africa defender Olwethu Makhanya is refusing to report back to Major League Soccer side Philadelphia Union amid a bitter dispute over what he believes was a broken promise to allow him a move to Europe.

The 20-year-old Bafana Bafana centre-back is currently absent from the Union squad, with US and South African reports saying he is adamant the club has unfairly denied him a transfer to Belgium – leaving his club future in limbo as the transfer window progresses.

Dispute over ‘broken promise’

US journalist Tom Bogert has reported that the standoff stems from Philadelphia’s decision to turn down a formal offer from a Belgian club – a move Makhanya is said to interpret as the club going back on its word.

Per Bogert’s reporting, sources close to the player say Makhanya believes he was given a clear undertaking that the Union would allow him to leave for Europe if a suitable proposal arrived. The Belgian bid, thought to be substantial by South African standards, was rejected by the MLS side, triggering the current impasse.

The Philadelphia hierarchy, however, are understood to reject the suggestion that any firm promise was made. Club officials insist the understanding was conditional and more general in nature – along the lines of “if an offer makes sense, we’ll do it” – and that in their view the financial valuation for the defender has not yet been met.

Gent lead European interest

South African outlet Soccer Laduma reports that Belgian heavyweights KAA Gent have been leading the chase for Makhanya, tabling several multimillion-rand offers for the former Premier Soccer League prospect.

Those bids have all been turned down by Philadelphia, who are believed to be holding out for a higher fee for one of the most highly rated young defenders to emerge from South Africa in recent years.

Gent, who regularly compete in European competition and are seen as a proven launchpad to the continent’s top five leagues, are keen to add Makhanya to their defensive options. Their persistence is understood to have strengthened the player’s conviction that a major career opportunity is being blocked.

Rangers make contact but talks stall

Scottish giants Rangers have also entered the picture. According to the same reports, the Glasgow club made initial contact with both Philadelphia Union and representatives from Makhanya’s camp to explore a potential deal.

However, those discussions did not progress beyond an exploratory stage, and there have been no indications so far that Rangers are close to lodging a formal bid.

The level of interest from both Belgium and Scotland nonetheless underlines Makhanya’s growing profile abroad, following his performances domestically and with the South African national team.

Future in limbo as stand-off continues

The dispute now leaves Makhanya’s immediate future uncertain. Philadelphia Union appear determined to maintain their current valuation and stance on the player, even as he stays away from the squad.

With the European transfer window open and clubs still reshaping their squads, the situation could yet evolve quickly if an improved offer arrives – or if the parties reach a compromise over the existing proposals.

For now, though, the stalemate represents a significant flashpoint in the increasingly common tension between ambitious African players seeking a European breakthrough and clubs eager to protect their assets and secure maximum value in the global transfer market.
