Olivier Giroud hints at retirement after Lille striker turns 40

Olivier Giroud has indicated that the current campaign is likely to be his final season as a professional footballer.

The Lille striker turns 40 on Wednesday and told French newspaper L’Equipe that he is enjoying each match as he approaches the end of his career.

“I think this is probably my last season. That is why I am enjoying every moment,” said Giroud.

Giroud has made six appearances in all competitions so far this season, scoring once.

Before retiring, he will aim to add to his club record of 303 goals in 806 matches.

The former France international scored 57 goals in 137 appearances for his country.

Giroud joined Lille on a free transfer from Los Angeles in the summer before last. His contract has since been extended until the end of the current season.
