OL: Samuel Umtiti Confirms His Desire to Stay but Awaits Talks with Management
While much of the spotlight at Olympique Lyonnais this season has been on star forwards Nabil Fekir and Alexandre Lacazette, Samuel Umtiti has quietly been a pillar of strength in Lyon’s defense. The Franco-Cameroonian centre-back has played a crucial role in helping OL finish second in Ligue 1, ensuring Champions League football next season.
Addressing his future at a press conference on Thursday, Umtiti struck a tone of cautious optimism. Though he remains open to progress and ambition, he made clear that Lyon is still where he feels at home:
“There are a lot of things to take into account. I want to progress, I want to evolve. There is this project here which is very interesting.”
He added that discussions with the club’s management are expected at the end of the season to define his next steps:
“We will have discussions at the end of the season. But I don’t know when. You have to ask the people who look after me. I am very happy here. I am fulfilled. We are having a good season. We are ambitious. So I am a very ambitious person. I think the club suits me well.”
With ambition aligning on both sides, all signs point to Umtiti remaining a key figure at OL next season—unless a major offer changes the equation during the summer transfer window.
