Nabil Fékir Embraces New Role as Lyon’s Playmaker Ahead of New Season
Nabil Fékir, who impressed last season with a strong start and a late surge in form, is preparing to build on that momentum this summer—this time from a new position on the pitch.
The Lyon academy graduate, known for his flair on the left wing, has shifted into a more central role as a number 10, operating behind the strikers. The change was on full display in Lyon’s recent friendly against Donetsk, where Fékir’s performance highlighted his adaptability and potential in the playmaker role.
With teammates Yoann Gourcuff and Clément Grenier sidelined due to injury, Fékir’s transition into the attacking midfield spot has become a key tactical move for the club. The French player of Algerian descent expressed confidence and enthusiasm about his new role.
“I played in my favorite position, it’s where I feel best. It’s my preferred position,” Fékir said after the match. “I’m trying to repay the trust the coach has placed in me as much as possible. We had a very good preparation in Tignes. Now, we have to work every day to try to be a starter. It’s interesting to play with all our classmates, we’re happy and it shows on the pitch.”
Fékir’s development has been promising—he ended last season on a high note, scoring his first top-flight goal against Bastia and cementing his status as a rising star at OL. His willingness to adapt and take on new responsibilities will be crucial as Lyon look to challenge on multiple fronts in the upcoming campaign.
