Okuhle Ngwenya earns Netherlands U15 debut after Arminia Bielefeld pathway

Okuhle ‘Oku’ Ngwenya has made his Netherlands U15 debut after beginning his development in Arminia Bielefeld’s Football Development Programme in South Africa.

Ngwenya, who joined the programme’s weekly sessions at the German School Johannesburg in 2022, was recently reunited with the Arminia Bielefeld staff who helped guide his early progress.

The programme was launched by the Bundesliga 2 club in 2022, giving the highly rated youngster the opportunity to train regularly under Arminia’s coaches and continue developing his football.

A year later, Ngwenya became the first player from the initiative to travel to Bielefeld with his family and experience the club at close quarters.

During the visit, he attended several training sessions, watched an Arminia first-team match and met club legends including Tom Schutz, as well as other professional players. He was also given behind-the-scenes access to the club.

The experience left a lasting impression on Ngwenya, who has since continued his progress in Europe.

After his father, Aubrey Ngwenya, accepted a job opportunity in the Netherlands, Okuhle earned a place in the FC Eindhoven youth academy. This year, he reached another significant milestone by representing the Netherlands U15 national team.

Nico Luft, Arminia Bielefeld’s Director Sales, said Ngwenya’s progress reflected the purpose of the South African programme.

“Oku’s journey is a fantastic example of what we want to achieve with our Football Development Programme in South Africa,” Luft said.

“Our ambition goes far beyond football training. We want to create meaningful opportunities for young player, support the development of local coaches and build sustainable partnerships that have a lasting impact on the communities we work with.

“Seeing Oku progress from our weekly training sessions in Johannesburg to the Netherlands U15 national team makes us incredibly proud. His story demonstrates the potential of this programme and motivates us to continue investing in the development of young talent in South Africa.”

Ngwenya’s father also praised the initiative and its role in his son’s development.

“The Arminia Football Development Programme in South Africa is unique, sustainable and highly professional. It has played an enormous role in my son’s development, and we are incredibly grateful to the club for the outstanding work it is doing in South Africa,” Aubrey Ngwenya said.

“The programme continues to evolve and creates a lasting impact for South African children and coaches. The collaboration with the Gauteng Legislature, in particular, demonstrates the strength of the relationships and the level of trust Arminia has built through its work in Johannesburg.

“We are very proud to be here today and to watch the match between Arminia and the South African U16 national team.”

Arminia Bielefeld will send a delegation back to Johannesburg early next month for further discussions with local partners and to introduce additional initiatives.

The visit will build on the programme’s existing foundations, strengthen its partnerships and support the continued development of sustainable football opportunities in South Africa.
