Ben Arfa Inspires Nice to Victory as Mendy Hails His Impact
OGC Nice claimed a hard-fought 2-1 win over SM Caen on Saturday during Matchday 3 of Ligue 1, thanks in large part to a moment of brilliance from Hatem Ben Arfa. The former French international opened the scoring with a superb goal that changed the complexion of the game and drew high praise from his teammates.
Ben Arfa, who joined Nice this summer after a frustrating spell at Newcastle United, showcased the quality that once made him one of France’s brightest prospects. With the match finely poised and Nice struggling to break through Caen’s disciplined defence, the 28-year-old produced a moment of individual brilliance to put the home side ahead.
Speaking after the match, midfielder Nampalys Mendy did not hold back in his admiration for the new arrival.
“Hatem’s goal changed everything,” Mendy told reporters. “We were in a difficult phase—we had possession but lacked penetration. His goal unlocked the game for us.”
Ben Arfa’s return to form has been a major talking point this season. After months on the sidelines and a complicated contractual situation that left him without competitive football for half a year, he has quickly shown flashes of the talent that once lit up Ligue 1 and the Premier League.
“He was already very good against Troyes last weekend, despite not playing for six months,” Mendy continued. “Clearly, he’s the most talented player I’ve ever played with. But what’s even more impressive is his humility. He’s grounded, not someone who lets success go to his head. You can tell he’s happy here—he’s fulfilled.”
The win over Caen was far from straightforward. Nice were forced to adapt to a mounting injury list, but Mendy highlighted the contributions of the club’s younger players, as well as the efforts of Jérémy Pied, who stepped up when it mattered most.
“This avalanche of injuries really complicates everything,” Mendy admitted. “But the young players have responded well. And we have to congratulate Jérémy Pied—he put in a great performance in difficult circumstances.”
With the three points secured, Nice can look ahead with renewed confidence. And if Ben Arfa continues to deliver such decisive performances, the Riviera club may yet prove to be one of the most exciting teams to watch this season in Ligue 1.
