Claude Puel demands greater consistency from Algerian midfielder Hicham Boudaoui at Nice

OGC Nice coach Claude Puel says he is waiting for greater consistency from Hicham Boudaoui as the Algerian midfielder continues to struggle with fitness issues.

Speaking to reporters two days before Nice’s trip to Stade Rennais FC on Sunday, the French manager addressed the situation of the 26-year-old, whose ability has long been recognised but whose physical condition has proved difficult to manage.

Puel acknowledged Boudaoui’s talent but admitted uncertainty over when the midfielder will be fully available to contribute consistently to the team.

“He’s at training, he disappears, he comes back… I’m waiting for consistency to see when he’ll be available. We’re waiting for his return. He’s a very good player. He’s the one who has the answer. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to manage him physically,” Puel confided.

Boudaoui has found it difficult to regain momentum with the Eagles since returning from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The midfielder has featured only briefly since the tournament, playing just 58 minutes and missing several matchday squads.

Those limited appearances have raised questions about his physical readiness, with the coaching staff continuing to monitor his condition closely.

Puel, who took charge of Nice in December, is keen to see the Algerian international return to the level that previously made him an important figure in the side.

Boudaoui is valued for his work rate in midfield, particularly his ability to recover possession and add energy to the team’s play.

The club’s technical staff hope he can soon regain the rhythm needed to contribute regularly during the closing stages of the season.

For now, however, the midfielder’s situation remains uncertain.

Whether Boudaoui can rediscover the consistency required to reclaim a key role in Nice’s midfield may depend largely on his ability to maintain regular training and recover his physical condition.

As Puel made clear, the next step lies with the player himself.
