David Trezeguet Joins Indian Super League, Following Pirès and Ljungberg
India is rapidly emerging as a new hotspot for former football stars, with several big names recently signing for the Indian Super League (ISL). The latest to join the trend is French striker David Trezeguet, who has signed for FC Pune City.
Trezeguet, 36, known for his prolific goal-scoring career in Europe, had spent the past few years playing in Argentina. Since late 2011, he featured for River Plate and later Newell’s Old Boys, where he maintained a solid scoring record. However, his stint in Argentina ended on a sour note after Newell’s Old Boys decided not to renew his contract.
In the 2013-2014 Argentine league season, Trezeguet played 24 matches and netted seven goals, showing he still has the ability to perform at a competitive level.
His move to the Indian Super League follows in the footsteps of other former international stars like Robert Pirès and Freddy Ljungberg, who have also recently committed to the league. The influx of such experienced players highlights the ISL’s growing appeal as it seeks to boost football’s popularity in India by bringing in seasoned professionals from around the world.
