Frank Lampard Joins New York City FC After Leaving Chelsea
Frank Lampard has officially signed with Major League Soccer side New York City FC, bringing an end to a glittering 13-year spell at Chelsea.
The 36-year-old midfielder, who was a free agent following the expiry of his contract at Stamford Bridge, has opted to begin a new chapter in the United States. Lampard will link up with the MLS expansion club ahead of their inaugural season in 2015.
Speaking at his unveiling, the former England international said:
“I want to continue to challenge myself. I’m coming to a great city and I want to prove that I can still play good football and be an important person in the dressing room. I want to be a leader here, both on and off the pitch.”
Lampard made over 600 appearances for Chelsea, becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer and winning numerous honours, including three Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.
He joins New York City FC as one of their marquee signings, alongside Spanish striker David Villa, as the club prepares to make its debut in Major League Soccer.
