Asamoah Gyan has reversed his decision to retire from international football following a phone call with Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo. The veteran striker confirmed his return in a statement released Wednesday, emphasizing that a request from the President was impossible to ignore.
“I accepted His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s request in good faith and made myself available to coach Kwesi Appiah,” Gyan said. “My desire to help Ghana win the Africa Cup of Nations, a trophy that has eluded us for 30 years, remains as strong as ever.”
Gyan’s announcement comes as a major boost for the Black Stars ahead of the 2019 AFCON, where Ghana will be looking to end a long title drought. The experienced forward, who has been a key figure for Ghana over the past decade, expressed his commitment to rejoin the national squad and contribute to the team’s success.
In a tweet posted on May 22, 2019, Gyan reiterated his decision to make himself available for selection by coach Kwesi Appiah and his readiness to help Ghana achieve continental glory:
“A presidential request is one that cannot be disregarded. I have taken the request of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in good faith, and will make myself available for selection by coach Kwesi Appiah to help win the AFCON trophy.”
The Black Stars now await the pre-selection announcement by Coach Appiah and the finalization of the team’s preparation program for the tournament. Gyan’s return is expected to provide both leadership and experience to the squad, enhancing their chances of ending Ghana’s 30-year wait for an AFCON title.
Gyan, who has scored crucial goals for Ghana in previous international tournaments, remains one of the most influential figures in the team. His decision to return underscores his enduring commitment to the national team and the country’s footballing ambitions.
With Gyan back in the fold, Ghanaian fans can look forward to seeing their star striker once again leading the attack, aiming to restore the nation’s standing at the top of African football. The team’s preparations, including training camps and squad selection, will now focus on integrating Gyan and optimizing strategies ahead of the continental competition.
The return of Asamoah Gyan not only strengthens the Black Stars’ attacking options but also serves as a morale boost for younger players, who can benefit from his experience and guidance on and off the pitch. As Ghana looks ahead to the AFCON, Gyan’s presence will be a pivotal factor in their campaign, both as a goal-scoring threat and as a leader within the squad.
The upcoming months will be crucial as the Black Stars finalize their preparations and aim to compete at the highest level. With Gyan’s commitment secured, Ghana enters the tournament with renewed hope and determination to reclaim the Africa Cup of Nations trophy after three decades.
