O West opens first phase of sports club in presence of Egypt’s Minister of Youth and Sports

Orascom Real Estate has opened the first phase of the O West Sports Club in West Cairo, at an event attended by Gohar Nabil, Minister of Youth and Sports, as well as national and international sports leaders, government representatives and senior officials from Orascom Development and Orascom Real Estate.

The club will cover 26 feddans across its two phases, with the first occupying 17 feddans and the second nine. It is designed to be one of the largest sports and social clubs in western Cairo, offering facilities and activities for people of different ages.

The development is intended to provide families with a combined destination for sport, fitness, recreation and community activities.

Speaking at the opening, Gohar Nabil highlighted the importance of sports clubs and facilities within integrated residential communities. He said they provide suitable environments for physical activity, help develop children and young people, and offer families safe and useful spaces for social and sporting activities.

“We are keen at the Ministry of Youth and Sports to encourage investment in sport and strengthen partnerships with the private sector to establish projects offering integrated sports and social services,” said Nabil.

“Such projects help promote sport as a way of life and broaden participation among all sections of society.”

He added that sport’s role extended beyond competitions, championships and achievements, becoming part of citizens’ daily lives. Cooperation between the state and private sector, he said, was important in expanding sports services and making them available to wider sections of the community.

Nabil also stressed the role new clubs could play in identifying and supporting sporting talent from an early age. He said young people needed appropriate facilities, opportunities and encouragement to develop their abilities.

“We hope the new clubs and sports facilities will provide a supportive environment for discovering and nurturing talent, while giving children and young people the chance to practise sport and develop their abilities,” he said.

“This will help produce new champions capable of representing Egypt at world and Olympic competitions.”

He thanked Orascom Development and everyone involved in delivering the project, saying he hoped the club would add to the country’s sports and social facilities, bring families and young people together, and encourage children to take up sport and discover new talents.

Dr Iskander Taameh, chairman of Orascom Development Egypt, described the opening as a significant milestone in the city’s development.

“The club, which will extend across 26 feddans in two phases and involve investments worth billions of pounds, reflects our commitment to developing facilities that improve quality of life,” he said.

The first phase includes a running track, eight squash courts, five padel courts, two basketball courts, an Olympic swimming pool, two 25-metre pools – one indoor and one outdoor – a children’s pool, five-a-side and 11-a-side football pitches, and an outdoor fitness area.

It also features the 2,500 sq m TRAX building, which offers a programme developing children’s motor and sporting skills from the age of three, introducing them to a range of sports before specialisation.

Work is under way on the second phase, which will have 6,139 sq m of built-up space across seven buildings. It is planned to include a leisure pool, Padbol, Pickleball and tennis courts, and a sports complex. The final delivery timetable and any additional facilities will be announced after approval.
