Nuno Mendes says he feels ‘very comfortable’ working with Jorge Jesus amid Cristiano Ronaldo uncertainty
Nuno Mendes says it is not his place to decide Cristiano Ronaldo’s future with Portugal after the forward left the team’s camp angry with manager Jorge Jesus.
Portugal beat Denmark 4-2 in the Nations League, with the team appearing unaffected by Ronaldo’s departure.
Speaking after the match, Mendes said the squad’s priority was to concentrate on its immediate responsibilities rather than discuss the situation surrounding their captain.
“Ronaldo is a player for the Portugal national team, and we are focusing more on what we need to do now and on what the coach wants to give us,” the Paris Saint-Germain left-back said, according to Sport.
Mendes added that he was enjoying working under Jesus and praised the manager’s plans for the team.
“I feel very comfortable working with Jesus. He has many good ideas for our team and for bringing out the talent we have,” he said.
Asked about the wider issue, Mendes insisted the players were not in a position to make decisions about Ronaldo.
“As for the rest, it is not our right to decide. We are here to welcome any player who joins us,” he said.
His comments reflect the position previously expressed by Portugal team-mate Joao Neves, who said during the World Cup that Ronaldo should be treated in the same way as every other member of the group.
