Nuno Espirito Santo locked in legal dispute with Nottingham Forest

While attempting to steer West Ham United away from the Premier League relegation zone, head coach Nuno Espirito Santo has become embroiled in a bitter legal dispute with his former employers Nottingham Forest over the circumstances surrounding his dismissal earlier this season.

The Portuguese manager born in Sao Tome, who is currently focused on West Ham’s fight for survival, has reportedly instructed lawyers to challenge his former club. Although the exact basis of the dispute has not been made public, sources familiar with the matter say the disagreement has become highly acrimonious, reflecting lingering resentment on both sides following his abrupt exit.

The fallout is particularly striking considering the heights Forest reached under Nuno only months earlier. On June 20, the 52-year-old was rewarded with a new three-year contract after guiding the club through what it described as an “incredible” campaign. Forest secured European football for the first time in three decades by finishing seventh in the Premier League, earning a place in the UEFA Europa League.

During that season, Forest spent several months inside the Champions League qualification positions before ultimately slipping to seventh. Nuno’s team also delivered several historic achievements, including the club’s longest top-flight winning run since 1967 and landmark away victories against Liverpool FC and Manchester United, results that ended droughts of 55 and 30 years respectively. The impressive run also earned him the Premier League Manager of the Month award on three occasions.

However, the atmosphere around the club shifted dramatically after the arrival of Edu Gaspar as global head of football within the multi-club structure overseen by Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis, whose football empire also includes Olympiacos and Rio Ave.

According to reports at the time, tensions surfaced almost immediately between Nuno and Edu during their first meeting, with the coach taking exception to remarks made by the former Arsenal FC director. Edu subsequently played a role in discussions that led Marinakis to dismiss Nuno only three games into the new season.

Forest’s statement announcing the decision on September 3 cited “recent circumstances” as the reason for the termination. The club also attempted to strike a conciliatory tone, stating that Nuno “will forever be remembered fondly in the history of the club … as someone who played a pivotal role in our success last season, he will always hold a special place in our journey”.

Despite that tribute, the dispute between both parties has continued behind the scenes. It remains unclear whether the legal case is linked to the compensation Nuno would have been due after being dismissed just 75 days after signing his new contract. Sources indicate grievances exist on both sides.

Meanwhile, the battle on the pitch adds further intrigue. West Ham have clawed back a seven-point deficit and now sit level on points with 17th-placed Forest following midweek fixtures.

Nuno’s side secured a 1-0 victory over Fulham FC, while Forest earned a 2-2 draw at title challengers Manchester City.

Despite the improvement, West Ham remain in the bottom three due to an inferior goal difference, setting up a tense relegation battle that could yet see Nuno’s current club overtake the side that dismissed him.
