Nuamah and Sulemana return as Ghana names quad for crucial AFCON 2025 qualifiers

Ghana head coach Otto Addo has named his 25-man squad for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches against Libya. The squad sees the return of Olympique Lyon forward Ernest Nuamah and Atalanta’s Ibrahim Sulemana, both of whom have recovered from recent injuries that kept them out of the previous round of qualifiers.

The Black Stars are set to take on Sudan first at the Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday, October 10, before traveling to Libya for the reverse fixture on Tuesday, October 15, at the Martyrs of Benina Stadium.

With Ghana currently sitting third in Group F, five points adrift of group leaders Angola, these matches are critical for the team’s qualification hopes.

Nuamah’s return is a welcome boost for Ghana’s attacking options.

The Lyon forward, known for his pace and creativity, will add depth to the frontline.

Similarly, Sulemana, a key figure in Atalanta’s midfield, is expected to strengthen the core of Ghana’s squad as they look to secure maximum points from these fixtures.

Ghana’s position in Group F is precarious, with only four matches left in the qualifying campaign.

The Black Stars currently trail Angola by five points, with Libya also vying for a spot in the top two.

As things stand, every match is crucial for Otto Addo’s men if they are to book their place in the tournament set to be hosted by Côte d’Ivoire.

The return of key players like Nuamah and Sulemana is timely, especially as Ghana will be looking to capitalize on home advantage when they face Sudan.

The Accra Sports Stadium is expected to be packed with passionate fans hoping to see the Black Stars close the gap at the top of the group standings.

However, the trip to Libya promises to be a challenging fixture.

The Martyrs of Benina Stadium in Benina has been a difficult venue for many visiting teams, and Ghana will need to be at their best to come away with a result.

In addition to Nuamah and Sulemana, the squad features other big names such as Mohammed Kudus of West Ham United, who has been in sensational form this season.

His creativity in midfield, combined with the leadership of Thomas Partey, is expected to be pivotal in controlling the tempo of the game.

Ghana will also look to the experience of Inaki Williams and Jordan Ayew up front, as well as the defensive solidity of players like Alexander Djiku and Alidu Seidu.

Goalkeeper Joseph Wollacott, along with Frederick Asare and Lawrence Ati-Zigi, will compete for the starting spot between the posts, while full-backs like Tariq Lamptey and Gideon Mensah offer pace and width from the backline.

Goalkeepers:
Joseph Wollacott, Frederick Asare, Lawrence Ati-Zigi

Defenders:
Alexander Djiku, Alidu Seidu, Tariq Lamptey, Abdul Munin, Salisu Mohammed, Jerome Opoku, Kingsley Schindler, Gideon Mensah, Isaac Afful

Midfielders:
Mohammed Kudus, Thomas Partey, Elisha Owusu, Majeed Ashimeru, Ibrahim Sulemana, Ernest Nuamah, Ibrahim Osman, Fatawu Issahaku, Joseph Paintsil

Strikers:
Antoine Semenyo, Inaki Williams, Jordan Ayew, Brandon Thomas Asante

With the stakes high, Otto Addo will be counting on his squad to deliver two strong performances and keep Ghana’s qualification hopes alive.

Fans will be hoping that the return of key players like Nuamah and Sulemana can spark a resurgence as the Black Stars enter this critical phase of their AFCON 2025 campaign.
