NPFL: Rivers United stun Nasarawa United to shake up title race

Rivers United pulled off a major upset in the Nigerian Premier Football League after defeating table-toppers Nasarawa United 1-0 on Sunday, a result that reshuffled the standings following Matchday 11.

At the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, the hosts seized control just before halftime when Timothy Zachariah’s strike in the 45th minute proved decisive.

The goal, a clinical finish against the run of play, handed Rivers United a vital three points and simultaneously ended Nasarawa United’s brief stay at the summit of the table.

Nasarawa, who entered the weekend as league leaders, struggled to break down a disciplined Rivers defence throughout the second half.

Despite enjoying long spells of possession and creating several half-chances, they were repeatedly frustrated by the visitors’ compact organisation and timely interceptions.

For Rivers United, the victory could mark a turning point in their campaign.

It was a display built on resilience and efficiency, the sort of performance that often signals a team’s resurgence.

The result lifted them to eighth place on 16 points, offering renewed hope as they look to climb further up the table in the coming weeks.

Nasarawa’s defeat, meanwhile, allowed Abia Warriors FC to take advantage.

With their 2-1 win over Niger Tornadoes, Abia Warriors surged to the top of the standings with 21 points, two clear of Nasarawa United, who now sit second.

The rest of Matchday 11 saw a series of tightly contested fixtures across the country.

Enyimba claimed a comfortable 2-0 home win over Kano Pillars, while Bayelsa United edged Plateau United 2-1 in a lively encounter.

Shooting Stars were held to a 1-1 draw by Katsina United, and El-Kanemi Warriors and Rangers International shared the spoils in a goalless stalemate.

Elsewhere, Ikorodu City continued their strong home form with a 2-0 win over Kun Khalifat, while Barau FC and Wikki Tourists played out a 0-0 draw in one of the day’s most physical clashes.

As the league table begins to tighten, Rivers United’s surprise victory may prove pivotal in a season where consistency, rather than brilliance, could determine the eventual champion.
