Norwich midfielder Forson Amankwah joins Black Stars for decisive AFCON qualifiers against Angola and Niger
Norwich City’s Forson Amankwah has received a late call-up to the Ghana national squad for their final Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifying matches against Angola and Niger. The 21-year-old midfielder, a former WAFA player, has been included among six new additions to the team following the withdrawal of eight other players.
Amankwah, who has made two previous appearances for the Black Stars in friendlies against Uganda and Niger in March, will have the chance to earn his competitive debut for Ghana during these critical AFCON qualifiers.
Ghana’s hopes of reaching the 2025 tournament in Morocco now hang in the balance, with two decisive matches set to determine the team’s fate.
The Black Stars are scheduled to begin training on Monday evening in Accra in preparation for their away fixture against Angola, set for Friday, November 15, in Luanda.
Following this, Ghana will return home to host Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, November 18.
The upcoming matches are vital for the Black Stars, who are currently third in Group F, trailing both Sudan and Angola.
Ghana’s qualifying campaign thus far has been challenging.
The team has only managed to secure two points from four games, leaving their qualification prospects out of their own hands.
Ghana must win both of their remaining matches while hoping for Sudan, who currently hold seven points, to lose both of their final games.
Head coach Chris Hughton faces a significant challenge in forming a cohesive lineup, given the numerous late withdrawals and recent squad changes.
Injuries and personal reasons have led to the absence of several key players, which prompted Hughton to bring in new additions, including Amankwah.
The Norwich City midfielder’s versatility and skill could prove valuable as Ghana fights to keep its qualification hopes alive.
With the Black Stars’ long-standing legacy in the AFCON tournament, fans are eagerly anticipating these last two matches, hoping the team can turn around a difficult campaign.
For Amankwah, this call-up represents an opportunity to establish himself on the international stage and contribute to his country’s success in a high-stakes environment.
Ghana’s national team staff and supporters will look to experienced players and emerging talents like Amankwah to rise to the challenge.
As the Black Stars prepare to face Angola and Niger, the pressure mounts on the squad to deliver the victories needed to secure their place in Morocco for the 2025 AFCON.
