Noah Atubolu: Hull City linked with Freiburg’s Germany-Nigeria goalkeeper in surprise move

Hull City have been linked with a move for Germany-Nigeria goalkeeper Noah Atubolu, who currently plays for Bundesliga side Freiburg.

The 24-year-old, born in Freiburg im Breisgau and standing at 1.90m, has emerged as one of the most highly regarded young goalkeepers in Germany, with Transfermarkt listing his market value at €25.00m. The reported interest from Championship club Hull would represent a major step if the Tigers attempt to lure a Bundesliga first-choice keeper to England’s second tier.

Details around any potential deal remain unclear, with the probability of the transfer currently marked as “?” and no information publicly available on when Atubolu’s Freiburg contract is due to expire. That has led to speculation around his medium-term future, including whether he could eventually run his deal down and leave as a free agent if no agreement on fresh terms is reached.

Atubolu, who holds both German and Nigerian nationality, has established himself as Freiburg’s number one, wearing the No 1 shirt and operating as a modern, ball-playing goalkeeper with a strong right foot. He has progressed through the ranks at his hometown club and represents SC Freiburg at senior level.

His recent outings in the Bundesliga have continued to draw attention. In his latest league appearance for Freiburg – a tightly contested match earlier this month in which his side were forced to defend for long spells – Atubolu produced a series of important saves in a narrow scoreline, underlining why he is rated so highly by analysts and scouts.

Hull City, operating in the Championship, would almost certainly need to be creative in any negotiations given Atubolu’s valuation and top-flight status in Germany. But if a deal were to materialise, the move could redefine both the trajectory of Hull’s project and Atubolu’s own career, placing him at the centre of an ambitious attempt to reach the Premier League.
