Nnamdi Collins is facing a challenging period at Eintracht Frankfurt after a series of inconsistent performances, although positive news about his latest injury has offered some relief.
The 22-year-old defender was forced off during Frankfurt’s 1-0 Bundesliga victory over FC Köln after suffering an injury to his left foot. However, according to Bild, examinations revealed no structural damage, raising hopes that he could return to team training this week and potentially be available for Saturday’s trip to Borussia Dortmund.
Collins had already endured a difficult start to the campaign after back problems disrupted his preparations. He subsequently returned to action against Freiburg before starting Frankfurt’s heavy 6-0 defeat to RB Leipzig, in which he struggled to contain the opposition’s attack.
His difficulties continued against Koln, where he moved to right-back in Frankfurt’s four-man defence. Collins conceded possession several times and struggled defensively before being substituted in the 71st minute.
Frankfurt coach Adi Hutter has acknowledged the inconsistency in the defender’s performances, describing them as a case of “sometimes light, sometimes shadow.”
The competition for places is also increasing. Elias Baum has emerged as an alternative at right-back, while Ansgar Knauff was introduced against Köln after Collins’ injury. Baum’s performances could strengthen his case for further opportunities if Collins fails to regain consistency.
Despite the criticism, the latest medical assessment provides encouragement for the young defender, who is eager to establish himself after an injury-disrupted period.
Collins could return to training before the weekend, but whether he starts against Dortmund remains uncertain. His immediate priority will be regaining full fitness and convincing Hütter that he can deliver more consistent performances.
