Nkota’s Orlando Pirates loan is a career reset, not a step back – agent

Mohau Nkota’s return to Orlando Pirates on loan is intended to revive his form and support his long-term ambitions rather than signal a backwards move, according to his agent Karabo Tshabuse.

The 21-year-old winger was confirmed on Thursday as returning to his former club from Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq until June next year. The move is designed to give him regular first-team football, help him rebuild his momentum after a serious injury and keep him closer to home following the recent death of his father.

Tshabuse said the decision had been taken with Nkota’s personal circumstances and career development in mind.

“I think it’s all about what Mohau needs at this particular stage of his career and his life. He has gone through a difficult season following the passing of his father, and coming back home gives him an opportunity to have a support structure around him, and most importantly he will still play professional football at the highest level.”

Nkota’s move to Al-Ettifaq generated considerable excitement, with the Saudi Arabian club reportedly paying about R40-million for his services. However, Tshabuse believes the temporary return to South Africa should be viewed as a short-term adjustment rather than a change in direction.

The player’s injury also affected his international prospects. Nkota was ruled out of Bafana Bafana’s historic appearance at the FIFA World Cup in the Americas after suffering a long-term setback shortly before the tournament.

His agent hopes a successful spell with Orlando Pirates will put him back in contention for the national team under new coach Pitso Mosimane.

“The injury did arrive at an unfortunate time, but such is life it’s unpredictable. We believe the loan spell will help in Mohau’s ability to compete again for a spot in the national team and he’s going back to a place where he can get back to his best and rediscover his form.”

Tshabuse said the loan proposal came from Nkota’s agency, with Orlando Pirates willing to provide the player with the environment needed to regain his confidence and rhythm.

The Soweto club previously gave Nkota the platform to establish himself, and his return means he will be familiar with the surroundings as he attempts to recover his best form. The immediate priority is to ensure he plays consistently and continues his development at the highest level.

Tshabuse also left open the possibility of Nkota returning to Al-Ettifaq before the loan expires or securing a permanent move to Orlando Pirates.

The winger’s future will therefore depend on how he performs during his time back in South Africa, with the loan providing an opportunity to rebuild both his club career and his international prospects.
