Ousmane Cissokho Reflects on Long Suspension: “I’m Coming Back Stronger”
By BBC Sport Africa | Ligue 2 Updates
After serving the majority of a nine-match suspension, Nîmes Olympique winger Ousmane Cissokho is counting down the days to his long-awaited return to the pitch — a comeback he describes as both “patient and impatient.”
Suspended following the infamous derby clash against Arles-Avignon, which ended in post-match scuffles in the tunnel, Cissokho received one of the heaviest bans in recent Ligue 2 memory. Speaking to ShowFoot.fr, the Senegalese attacker opened up about the emotional toll of his absence and his resolve to return stronger.
“Finally, I want to say. I’m going to serve my 7th match and I’ll only have two weeks left,” said Cissokho with visible anticipation.
While other players involved in the incident, such as Bocaly, received lighter punishments, Cissokho believes his nine-game ban was disproportionate and unfair.
“Everything that happened in the tunnel, I didn’t start it. I just find it unfair that Bocaly only took three matches and I got nine. But I’m taking my troubles patiently.”
Reflecting on the incident, the 27-year-old expressed deep regret — not just for himself, but for the impact on his team:
“If I had to do it again, I wouldn’t. I would’ve just walked back to the locker room. The coach was counting on me, and I ended up penalizing the team and myself.”
Despite the psychological strain of watching from the sidelines, Cissokho has taken the time to reassess his approach, describing his current mindset as that of a “joker” ready to come in and make a difference.
“It’s like I’m coming in to replace an injured player. I’m trying to put that idea in my head and give my all when I return.”
With Nîmes fighting for stability in a competitive Ligue 2 campaign, Cissokho’s return could provide the offensive spark they’ve been missing. The forward had shown promising form before the suspension, and his determination to make amends may well prove vital in the weeks ahead.
The new Cissokho isn’t just aiming to play — he’s aiming to make an impact.
