Niko Kovac backs Mussa Kaba for Dortmund preseason
Borussia Dortmund coach Niko Kovac is hoping to have young midfielder Mussa Kaba available when the squad reports back for preseason this summer.
The club recently rewarded the 17-year-old with his first professional contract, underlining the belief in his long-term potential.
Kovac recalled that Kaba joined the first team for a short training camp in January and even made the matchday squad against Eintracht Frankfurt. “We saw some pretty good things,” the BVB boss said, pointing to the positive impressions the youngster left during those early opportunities.
Persistent physical issues have since stalled Kaba’s momentum, with the midfielder now following an individual rehab and build-up programme instead of pushing for minutes with the senior side. Even so, Kovac remains upbeat about his development: “He will use the time wisely to prepare himself so that he will hopefully be with the team when we start again (in the summer).”
The Dortmund coach clearly believes Kaba can grow into an important option in midfield. “He will demonstrate his abilities, I am convinced of that,” Kovac added, making it clear the door to the first team will be wide open if the youngster can stay fit and continue to progress.
