Niko Kovac backs Ethan Nwaneri for important Dortmund role

Ethan Nwaneri has made a strong early impression at Borussia Dortmund, and coach Niko Kovac believes the Arsenal loanee can become an important player in the months ahead.

After two substitute appearances, the 19-year-old could now be rewarded with his first start against SC Paderborn on Saturday.

Dortmund had wanted Nwaneri during the previous season, but their interest became more urgent after Giannis Konstantelias suffered an injury. This time, the club succeeded in bringing the England international to Germany. Kovac has also been pleased by how quickly the teenager has settled into the dressing room.

“Ethan wanted to join us last season because we were convinced by him and still are,” Kovac explained. “He has integrated very well, he fits in and is a fine person. He is calm, grounded, friendly and helpful.”

The coach has been equally impressed by Nwaneri’s football. “He has already shown in his two appearances that he can help the team with his abilities. I am very satisfied with him, and he will continue to be very important in the coming weeks and months,” Kovac said.

Nwaneri’s quality in possession gives Dortmund greater calm and security. With Konstantinos Karetsas unavailable, the youngster’s chances of starting against Paderborn have increased significantly.
