Nigeria's William Troost-Ekong sets sights on AFCON glory

Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong has set his sights on winning the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, after narrowly missing out on glory in the last edition.

The Super Eagles were runners-up at the 2023 tournament in Ivory Coast, where they suffered a 2-1 defeat to the host nation in the final.

Troost-Ekong played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s campaign, scoring three goals and earning the accolade of the tournament’s best player.

Reflecting on his international journey, the defender expressed his ambition to claim the elusive continental title.

“I have already participated three times, winning bronze and silver, but never gold.

This is my ultimate goal, and it is important for me and for all the young people in Africa and Nigeria,” he said.

The 30-year-old first featured at the AFCON in 2019, where Nigeria secured third place in Egypt.

Currently playing for Al Kholood in Saudi Arabia, Troost-Ekong remains determined to help the Super Eagles triumph in the upcoming edition set to be held in Morocco.

However, the former Watford defender acknowledged the tough nature of the competition.

“We face challenges, but I have seen constant improvements over the last three tournaments.

The climate is a difficult factor to adapt to,” he noted. He also referenced Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah’s remarks on the demanding conditions of the tournament, highlighting the unique obstacles faced by players at the AFCON.

Troost-Ekong’s leadership and experience are seen as vital for Nigeria’s hopes of ending their AFCON title drought, with their last triumph dating back to 2013.

As the team prepares for the tournament, the captain remains focused on guiding the Super Eagles to the top of African football.
