Nigeria international Esther Okoronkwo is expected to miss the remainder of the year after suffering an injury that has ruled her out for the rest of the Northern Super League season.

The injury is also set to deal a blow to the Super Falcons, with Okoronkwo expected to miss Nigeria’s upcoming CAF Women’s Olympic qualifier against Comoros next month as the West African giants begin their campaign to qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Okoronkwo has been an important part of Nigeria’s attacking setup, and her absence will leave the Super Falcons without one of their established attacking options as they prepare for the Olympic qualifying campaign.

At a pre-match conference, Toronto FC coach Marko Milanovic Milanovic confirmed that the Nigerian forward would not be available for the fixture and revealed that the club does not expect her to return before the end of the season.

“She won’t be available for the game,” Milanovic said. “And we don’t expect her to come back this season.”

The coach also admitted that the exact circumstances surrounding the injury remain unclear, suggesting that it may have developed gradually as a result of accumulated physical strain rather than being caused by one specific incident.

“It’s hard to know exactly where it happened. It could have been just wear and tear over a longer period,” Milanovic explained.

He further revealed that Okoronkwo has undergone several MRI scans since the injury, but the results have not provided a straightforward explanation of the problem.

“She’s had multiple MRIs, obviously, since the injury. Some of the things presented themselves a little differently than what they were, despite MRI usually being able to show you everything,” he added.

The setback comes at an unfortunate time for Okoronkwo, who was expected to play a role in Nigeria’s preparations for the Olympic qualifiers. The Super Falcons will now have to consider alternative options in attack ahead of their meeting with Comoros.

Nigeria are targeting qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games, which will be staged in Los Angeles, United States, and will be hoping to navigate the African qualifying process successfully after missing out on the previous Olympic tournament.

Okoronkwo’s absence could therefore represent a major setback for the Super Falcons, particularly given her ability to contribute goals, creativity and movement in the final third.

For AFC Toronto, the Nigerian forward’s injury is equally significant as the club enters the decisive stages of the Northern Super League campaign. With Milanovic ruling out a return before the end of the season, the Canadian side will have to finish the campaign without one of its attacking players.

The priority for Okoronkwo will now be her recovery, with the club and the Nigerian national team expected to closely monitor her rehabilitation in the coming months.

Her absence from the upcoming Olympic qualifier means Nigeria’s technical team will have to reshuffle its attacking options, while fans of the Super Falcons will hope the forward can make a full recovery and return to international football in the new year.
