Nigeria’s Chidozie Awaziem nears return to FC Nantes in long-term deal

Chidozie Awaziem

Chidozie Awaziem is set to make a return to FC Nantes, nearly seven years after his initial spell with the club.

The Nigerian international, currently playing for Major League Soccer side Colorado Rapids, is expected to sign a long-term contract with the French outfit that will keep him at the club until 2028.

The 28-year-old defender’s return marks a strategic move by Nantes to reinforce their backline ahead of the upcoming season.

Awaziem, who spent the 2017–2018 campaign on loan at the Ligue 1 side from FC Porto, left a lasting impression during his initial tenure, and the club now looks to recapture that solidity by bringing him back on a permanent basis.

His expected arrival follows the recent acquisition of Serbian centre-back Uros Radakovic and could be complemented by the signing of Moroccan striker Youssef El-Arabi, as Nantes continue to reshape their squad with a focus on experience and versatility.

Awaziem’s defensive qualities are widely recognised. Strong in aerial duels and composed under pressure, he is equally comfortable playing in both a three-man or traditional four-man defensive line.

This adaptability is seen as a key asset for Nantes, who have struggled for consistency at the back over the past few seasons.

The Nigerian’s composure, reading of the game, and physical presence are expected to bolster a backline that has lacked structure and cohesion.

With over 30 caps for the Nigerian national team, Awaziem brings a wealth of international experience to the squad.

His career has spanned several leagues in Europe, including stints with FC Porto in Portugal, CD Leganés in Spain, Alanyaspor in Turkey, and a period in Croatia with HNK Hajduk Split.

Most recently, he featured prominently for Colorado Rapids in the MLS, where his performances once again demonstrated his reliability and defensive awareness.

The move also represents a reunion with a club where he previously found success. During his loan spell in the 2017–18 season, Awaziem made a solid impression with his physicality and tactical awareness, earning praise for his maturity at a young age.

FC Nantes are now banking on that familiarity, along with his growth over the past few years, to make an immediate impact.

As the French side looks to stabilise its defensive unit, Awaziem’s leadership and professionalism could play a pivotal role.

His ability to slot into multiple systems provides head coach flexibility in approach, especially in a Ligue 1 campaign that promises stiff competition and high stakes.

Though the official announcement is yet to be made, the deal is reportedly in its final stages, with only formalities left before his return is confirmed.

Awaziem is expected to undergo a medical in the coming days before joining his new teammates in pre-season preparations.

For FC Nantes, bringing back Chidozie Awaziem is a calculated effort to blend experience with tactical versatility—key ingredients in their aim to rebuild a resilient and competitive squad.
