FC Basel have confirmed that midfielder Jeremy Agbonifo is in talks over a transfer after he was left out of their squad to face FC Lugano, raising fresh questions about his short-term future.
The 20-year-old, who is on loan at Basel from RC Lens, did not feature in the matchday selection, with the Swiss side confirming discussions are ongoing regarding a potential move.
His absence has intensified speculation that a return to Sweden could be imminent as he looks to regain momentum in his development.
Agbonifo joined Lens on a permanent deal in the summer of 2025 following an eye-catching spell at BK Häcken, where his performances marked him out as a promising young midfielder.
However, his time in Switzerland has proved challenging. Across all competitions this season, he has scored twice in 16 appearances, struggling to command a regular starting role.
Sources close to the situation indicate that a loan move back to Häcken is advancing, offering the player a return to a familiar environment where he previously flourished.
Such a switch could provide valuable playing time and stability at a crucial stage in his career.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his immediate destination, Agbonifo remains under contract with Lens until 2028.
Any temporary move would therefore be viewed primarily as an opportunity to accelerate his progress rather than a long-term separation from the French club.
Basel’s confirmation of ongoing talks suggests a resolution may be reached soon, with all parties appearing focused on finding the best pathway for the midfielder’s continued growth.
For Agbonifo, the coming days could determine whether a homecoming to Swedish football becomes the next step in his professional journey.
