The recently concluded AFCON showcased the Elephants of La Cote d’Ivoire emerging victorious with a 2-1 triumph over Nigeria in Abidjan.
Notably, Jose Peseiro, the Portuguese trainer, exceeded expectations by guiding Nigeria to the finals, marking the team’s first appearance in the continental showpiece final in 11 years.
Despite a commendable performance, the outcome saw them fall short against Ivory Coast in the final last Sunday.
While the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) is yet to unveil any contractual plans for Peseiro’s future, reports from Soccernet Nigeria indicate that Emmanuel Amunike, a former Barcelona player and AFCON 1994 winner, has expressed interest in becoming the next Super Eagles coach.
Amunike, in a statement to News Central TV, emphasized his Nigerian heritage and willingness to contribute to the team if deemed fit by the nation.
“I’m a Nigerian. All my life, I have served Nigeria as a player,” He told News Central TV.
“If Nigerians find me fit to add value to the team, of course, it is a welcome development.
However, he stressed that the current focus should be on supporting the team and fellow Nigerians who may be experiencing disappointment.
“But for now, it is not necessary to talk about the issue. We have to support the team and other Nigerians; they are going through a lot of sadness.
“We all want the best for our country, the best for our football. This has to be respected.” Amunike concluded.
The NFF is expected to make decisions in the near future regarding whether Peseiro will continue as the Super Eagles coach or if a new coach, with Amunike as a potential candidate, will assume the role.
