Chidozie Awaziem has officially rejoined FC Nantes, signing a contract that will keep him at the Ligue 1 club until June 2028.

The 28-year-old Nigerian centre-back arrives from Major League Soccer side Colorado Rapids, marking his second spell with the French outfit.

Awaziem’s return to Nantes rekindles a connection first established during the 2017–2018 season, when he impressed during a loan spell from FC Porto.

His latest move, finalised this week, reflects the club’s intent to strengthen its defensive line with experienced and versatile talent.

While the transfer fee remains undisclosed, Nantes confirmed the deal through an official statement, describing Awaziem as a key addition to the squad.

His arrival is expected to bolster the team’s backline with much-needed stability and leadership, as the Canaries look to improve on last season’s underwhelming defensive record.

A product of the FC Porto academy, Awaziem has carved out a solid career across multiple European leagues. Following his formative years in Portugal, he enjoyed spells in Ligue 1 with Nantes and Lorient, in Spain with CD Leganés, and in Turkey with Alanyaspor.

Each stint added to his reputation as a reliable, physically imposing centre-half with strong aerial presence and positional awareness.

Internationally, Awaziem has earned consistent call-ups to the Nigerian national team, with whom he has competed in both the Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifying campaigns.

His return to Ligue 1 comes at a pivotal point in his career, offering a familiar environment where he previously delivered promising performances.

At FC Nantes, Awaziem is expected to bring maturity, composure, and experience to a defensive unit undergoing restructuring.

His prior knowledge of the club’s culture and expectations could prove invaluable in aiding a smooth transition both on and off the pitch.

Club officials have expressed confidence that Awaziem’s presence will enhance competition for places in the squad while reinforcing the team’s defensive discipline.

With Ligue 1 set to begin in the coming weeks, Nantes will be keen to integrate the Nigerian international into their tactical setup without delay.

The player himself has yet to issue a formal statement following the announcement, but sources close to the club suggest he is enthusiastic about returning to a league and team where he previously found comfort and form.

Training with the first team is expected to commence immediately as he works toward full match readiness.

Awaziem’s signing reflects a broader strategy by Nantes to combine youth development with seasoned acquisitions.

The club’s summer recruitment drive has focused on players capable of delivering immediate impact while fitting into long-term planning—an approach underscored by the length of the contract awarded to the Nigerian defender.

With the new season fast approaching, all eyes will be on whether Awaziem can recapture the form that first endeared him to the Nantes faithful.

His track record across Europe suggests he is more than capable of rising to the occasion once again.
