The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) was thrown into disrepute on Sunday, October 12, 2025, after violent scenes erupted during the Matchday 8 encounter between Kano Pillars and Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.

The heated fixture, which began in front of a packed home crowd, took a dark turn in the closing stages. Kano Pillars had taken an early lead in the 9th minute, but Shooting Stars fought hard and equalised dramatically in stoppage time. What should have been a thrilling end to an intense contest quickly spiralled into chaos.

Moments after the equaliser, sections of the home supporters reportedly breached security barriers, invading the pitch and pelting Shooting Stars players and officials with dangerous objects, including stones and bottles. The violent scenes left several 3SC players injured and forced officials to intervene to restore order.

In an official statement, Shooting Stars strongly condemned the attack, describing the incident as “appalling and unacceptable.” The Ibadan-based club emphasised that football should unite, not divide, and that there is no place for intimidation or violence in the beautiful game.

“Football must remain a force for unity, passion, and community,” the club stated.

“We call on the NPFL and relevant security agencies to investigate this unfortunate incident thoroughly and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.”

The club further urged the league authorities to impose strict disciplinary actions on those responsible to safeguard the integrity of Nigerian football and protect players, coaches, and officials from such threats in the future.

As of now, the Nigeria Premier Football League management is yet to issue an official response, but calls are growing for decisive action to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

The violent conclusion to the Kano Pillars vs Shooting Stars clash serves as another reminder of the urgent need for improved security and fan management measures in Nigerian football.
