John Obuh, the coach of the Flying Eagles under-20 team in Nigeria, has resigned from his position, citing the intense pressure on coaches in Nigeria as a significant factor in his decision. Obuh submitted his resignation letter to the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) after the team’s elimination in the round of 16 at the Ali Sami Arena in Istanbul.
In an interview with KickOffNigeria, Obuh mentioned the pressure as a key factor in his decision and expressed the need for time to reflect on his future and spend time with his family. He had been at the helm of the Nigerian juniors for six years, and his notable achievement was leading the team to the quarter-finals in the 2009 competition held in Colombia.
The recent elimination in the round of 16 in the 19th edition of the tournament, where Nigeria was defeated by Uruguay (1-2), influenced Obuh’s decision to step down. Despite the setback, he acknowledged the abundance of talent in Nigeria and expressed hope that the next coach would lead the team to greater success, surpassing the achievements of his tenure.
