Nigeria targets George Ilenikhena as France monitors rising star

Nigeria targets George Ilenikhena as France monitors rising star

George Ilenikhena’s impressive form for AS Monaco has drawn the attention of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), with the 18-year-old striker emerging as a potential call-up for the Super Eagles ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Since returning from injury, Ilenikhena has been in outstanding form, scoring three goals in two matches.

His performances have reinforced his growing reputation, making him a player of interest for both Nigeria and France at the international level.

Born in Lagos, Ilenikhena moved to France at the age of three and developed through the ranks at Amiens. In January 2023, he made history as the youngest goalscorer in Ligue 2 at just 16 years and 147 days.

After securing a transfer to Monaco in July 2024, he has continued his rise, with one of his standout moments coming in the Champions League against FC Barcelona.

His goal in that match made him the youngest player to score for Monaco in the competition at 18 years and 34 days.

This season, the forward has made 25 appearances across all competitions, scoring six goals and providing two assists.

He has accumulated 777 minutes on the pitch, including six Champions League matches, where he has netted twice.

Decision looms between France and Nigeria

Ilenikhena’s international future remains undecided, with both Nigeria and France closely following his progress.

The French Football Federation (FFF) is reportedly considering naturalising him to represent Les Bleus, with discussions expected to gain momentum in early 2025.

In response, the NFF has intensified its efforts to secure the young forward for the Super Eagles.

Former Nigerian international Victor Ikpeba has been vocal in his support for Ilenikhena’s inclusion, stressing his potential and the urgency for Nigeria to act.

The decision is likely to hinge on the opportunities available at the national team level and the prospect of competing in the 2026 World Cup.

With Nigeria currently engaged in the qualification campaign, the team’s trajectory could play a crucial role in influencing Ilenikhena’s choice.
