Nigeria Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu has opened up after being nominated for the 2024 FIFA Puskás Award, which honours the best goal of the year.
His nomination stems from a stunning acrobatic backheel goal he scored while playing for Trabzonspor against Konyaspor last season.
The remarkable goal, which occurred in the 85th minute, clinched a thrilling 2-1 victory for Trabzonspor and has drawn comparisons to some of the most memorable strikes by football legend Zlatan Ibrahimović.
Onuachu expressed appreciation for the recognition and highlighted the vital role Trabzonspor’s fans played in his success.
“I had wonderful days there. I always felt the incredible support of the fans. Their contribution to my success is great,” he told Turkish media outlet 61saat.
Onuachu’s goal is now part of a competitive shortlist that includes impressive efforts from players like Mohammed Kudus and Alejandro Garnacho.
Now back at Southampton, Onuachu’s future remains uncertain. Trabzonspor are reportedly keen on re-signing the 30-year-old striker, with ongoing discussions about a potential permanent transfer.
