The Super Falcons of Nigeria are through to the final of the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a dramatic 2-1 victory over South Africa on Tuesday evening.

In a fiercely contested semi-final clash, it was Nigeria who drew first blood. After dominating much of the first half, the Super Falcons were rewarded on the stroke of halftime with a penalty. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade calmly slotted home from the spot to hand her side a 1-0 lead going into the break.

But South Africa responded with intensity after the restart. Banyana Banyana pushed forward with purpose and were handed a lifeline in the 60th minute when they earned a penalty of their own. Star forward Linda Motlhalo made no mistake, bringing the match level at 1-1.

The closing stages of the game were packed with tension, as both teams battled for supremacy. Just when it seemed the game was heading to extra time, Nigeria found a breakthrough in dramatic fashion.

In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Michelle Alozie sent in a long-range cross that deceived the South African defense and nestled into the net, sending the Nigerian fans into raptures.

With the 2-1 win, Nigeria have sealed their place in the final, where they will face the winner of the other semi-final between Morocco and Ghana.
