Stephen Keshi Returns as Nigeria’s Head Coach
In a significant development for Nigerian football, Stephen Keshi has officially returned as the head coach of the Super Eagles. On Tuesday, the 53-year-old signed a two-year contract to take the reins of the national team for the third time in just two years.
In his first comments after signing the deal, Keshi expressed confidence in the team’s future: “I remain convinced that this time we will see improvement, a change of attitude, and positive results.” This time around, Keshi is determined to push the team further, aiming for greater success and a positive transformation.
As part of his reshaped coaching team, Keshi has opted for a new assistant. Daniel Amokachi, who had been working alongside him, has been replaced by Salisu Yusuf.
Keshi’s first spell as coach of Nigeria began in 2012, when he led the team to victory in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa. Despite his success, his contract wasn’t renewed after the 2014 World Cup, but due to intervention from then-President Goodluck Jonathan, Keshi returned in 2014. He was on a match-by-match contract, which came to an end after Nigeria’s early elimination from the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
Now, with fresh support and new leadership changes, Keshi is hopeful for a better future and a renewed sense of direction for the Super Eagles.
