Strange Twist: Stephen Keshi Returns as Nigeria Coach Amid Political Turmoil
In a surprising reversal, Stephen Keshi will return to manage Nigeria’s Super Eagles for the final two matches of the 2015 AFCON qualifiers, just two weeks after being officially dismissed. The development was confirmed by Toyin Ibitoye, Director of Communications for the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).
The decision, widely reported across Nigerian media, is the result of government intervention, particularly mediation led by President Goodluck Jonathan between newly elected NFF president Amaju Pinnick and his ousted rival Chris Giwa. Giwa’s contested leadership had led to a court ruling invalidating Pinnick’s election, putting Nigeria at risk of a FIFA suspension for political interference.
In this atmosphere of administrative chaos, Keshi will once again take charge — despite being sacked following poor results. Interim coach Shaibu Amodu, who replaced Keshi, has agreed to work alongside the 2013 AFCON-winning manager.
With only 4 points in Group A, Nigeria must win both remaining matches to keep their hopes of qualifying for the 2015 African Cup of Nations alive — a task now made even more challenging by the off-field distractions.
