Nigeria’s Super Falcons will face Portugal in a crucial international friendly on Monday as preparations intensify for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, which begins in Morocco next month.
With just weeks remaining until the continental showpiece, the nine-time African champions are ramping up their readiness with a high-calibre fixture against one of Europe’s top sides.
Ranked inside the top 20 globally, Portugal are expected to provide a stern test for Nigeria when the two nations meet at the Estádio José Gomes in Lisbon at 7 p.m. local time.
Led by head coach Justine Madugu, the Super Falcons are entering the final stages of their build-up to the tournament.
The squad departed Abuja on Sunday morning, first making a stop in Casablanca before completing the journey to the Portuguese capital.
Prior to their departure, players and staff finalised visa arrangements at the Portuguese and Moroccan embassies, while also taking part in a series of training sessions in Abuja.
Several key players have already joined camp, including first-choice goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, experienced defender Osinachi Ohale, midfield enforcer Christy Ucheibe, and veteran forward Francisca Ordega.
However, the squad is not yet at full strength.
Notable absentees such as Michelle Alozie, Ashleigh Plumptre, Rasheedat Ajibade, Halimatu Ayinde, Jennifer Echegini, and Toni Payne are expected to link up with the team in Lisbon ahead of Monday’s encounter.
Their arrival will mark the completion of the first phase of preparations as Nigeria look to fine-tune both personnel and tactics.
The clash against Portugal is the first in a planned series of preparatory matches ahead of the tournament in Morocco.
Another friendly has been confirmed against Ghana’s Black Queens on June 29 in Casablanca.
These fixtures are seen as essential opportunities for the Super Falcons to solidify their tactical approach and team cohesion in competitive match conditions.
Nigeria will compete in Group B of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, alongside Tunisia, Botswana, and Algeria.
All group fixtures are set to be played at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca.
With continental supremacy on the line and strong opposition awaiting in Morocco, the Super Falcons are under no illusions about the challenge ahead.
Every moment on the pitch—from friendly fixtures to final group matches—will be key in their pursuit of a record-extending tenth African title.
