The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has confirmed that the upcoming 2025–26 season will begin on 22 August, with the campaign set to conclude two days short of a full year later on 24 August 2026.
The announcement was made official on Friday, 13 June, by the NPFL’s governing council.
In a statement shared with the public, the league emphasized its intention to maintain a consistent football calendar, mirroring the format successfully implemented in the recently concluded 2024–25 season.
“In its resolution to maintain the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) calendar established during the recently concluded season, the Council announced on Friday that the 2025/26 season will commence on August 22, 2025 and conclude on the 24th,” the statement read.
NPFL President Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye reaffirmed the league’s dedication to providing a stable and predictable schedule for all stakeholders involved.
“The league was determined to establish a traditional period for the competition to enable clubs, players, match officials and scouts to plan their own calendar,” Elegbeleye explained.
While the kickoff date is now set, the detailed fixture list for the season has yet to be released.
Clubs, fans, and officials alike await the unveiling of match pairings and venues that will define the coming campaign.
Reigning champions Remo Stars will look to defend their title when the league resumes in August, while Rivers United, who finished as runners-up last season, are also expected to contend strongly once again.
Abia Warriors and Ikorodu City rounded out the top four positions, showing a growing competitiveness across the league.
In the previous season, Nasarawa United’s striker Anas Yusuf clinched the Golden Boot after an impressive 18-goal haul, despite his team finishing a distant 12th on the table.
His individual brilliance stood out as one of the season’s biggest talking points.
As anticipation builds, clubs across the country are expected to intensify preparations during the off-season.
With the countdown now officially underway, attention will soon turn to transfers, pre-season form, and the search for new stars ahead of another year of Nigerian top-flight football.
