Nigeria one step closer to landing former Chelsea gem Lesley Ugochukwu

Nigeria could soon have another major midfield option available, with former Chelsea midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu beginning the process of switching his international allegiance from France to the Super Eagles.

The 22-year-old, who was born in France to Nigerian parents, has represented Les Bleus at youth level but is yet to receive a senior national team call-up. That leaves the door open for a potential switch under FIFA regulations.

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle could benefit from the arrival of a player with Ugochukwu’s profile, as Nigeria continues to strengthen its squad ahead of future international competitions.

The midfielder has reportedly started the process of acquiring a Nigerian passport, a key step before he can officially apply to change his football nationality with world governing body FIFA.

Once approved, Ugochukwu would become eligible to represent Nigeria at senior level, adding another talented option to Chelle’s midfield pool.

Although France remains an option due to his previous involvement with their youth teams, Ugochukwu’s lack of a senior appearance means he is still able to make the switch.

His decision comes at a time when Nigeria are looking to build greater competition in midfield, with Chelle seeking players who can provide physicality, energy and technical quality.

A move to Nigeria would give the Super Eagles a midfielder who fits the demands of modern international football.

Ugochukwu developed through the Rennes academy and established himself as a physically dominant defensive midfielder before earning a move to Chelsea in 2023.

While naturally a holding midfielder, he has shown qualities that allow him to operate as a box-to-box player. His ability to carry the ball, cover ground and compete physically could make him a valuable addition to Chelle’s plans.

The 22-year-old is also comfortable under pressure and possesses the work rate required to operate in an intense midfield system.

Galatasaray move offers chance to revive momentum

Ugochukwu is currently focused on making an impact at club level after completing a loan move from Burnley to Turkish giants Galatasaray.

The midfielder spent last season on loan at Burnley after leaving Chelsea, gaining valuable experience in competitive football.

A strong spell in Turkey could further strengthen his case for a place in the Super Eagles squad if his nationality switch is completed.
