The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has issued an official clarification following a protest lodged by Bayelsa United concerning their Federation Cup Round of 16 defeat to Nasarawa United.
Bayelsa United, who were eliminated on penalties after a tightly contested encounter, formally questioned the eligibility of five Nasarawa United players.
The club filed a complaint in the aftermath of the shootout loss, raising concerns that the players in question were not duly registered and, therefore, should not have participated in the fixture.
In response to the claims, the NFF launched a review to assess the legitimacy of the players’ registration.
Following its investigation, the Federation concluded that there was no violation of the competition’s rules.
“The players referenced in Bayelsa United’s protest were all properly registered and eligible to feature in the tournament,” the NFF stated. “After a thorough examination of the documentation submitted by Nasarawa United and cross-checking with our internal registration records, we can confirm that all necessary procedures were followed.”
The decision effectively upholds the result of the match, which saw Nasarawa United progress to the quarter-finals of the Federation Cup.
Bayelsa United had hoped the appeal would overturn the result or force a replay.
However, the NFF’s ruling means that Nasarawa United’s place in the next round is secure, and no further disciplinary action will be taken.
While the NFF acknowledged the right of any club to raise legitimate concerns, it reiterated its commitment to ensuring transparency and fairness throughout the Federation Cup.
“We understand that in the heat of competition, emotions can run high,” the statement continued. “But the integrity of the tournament remains our utmost priority. All clubs are encouraged to verify facts and consult official records before escalating issues.”
With the controversy now settled, attention shifts back to the pitch as the remaining teams prepare for the next round of fixtures.
Nasarawa United, buoyed by their progression and now cleared of any wrongdoing, will be looking to carry their momentum forward.
Bayelsa United, meanwhile, will have to turn the page on this chapter and refocus their efforts elsewhere, as the quest for silverware in this year’s Federation Cup comes to an end.
