Former Nigeria international Nwankwo Kanu underwent another heart operation over the weekend, according to reports from the Nigerian press. The operation was aimed at addressing a heart-related issue, and Kanu opted for the procedure during his annual physical examination at a Cleveland hospital.
Onyebuchi Abia, coordinator of the Kanu Heart Foundation, confirmed that the surgery was successful, and Kanu is currently in recovery. The 37-year-old former Ajax striker, who won the African Golden Ball twice in 1996 and 1999, has been focusing on his health and well-being.
Kanu has a history of heart issues, having undergone open-heart surgery in 1996 after doctors at Inter Milan discovered a heart abnormality during his transfer. Despite this setback, Kanu went on to have a successful football career, including stints at Arsenal where he won the Premier League twice in 2002 and 2004.
Following his retirement from professional football, Kanu established the Kanu Heart Foundation, which aims to provide medical assistance to individuals with heart conditions in Africa. The foundation has contributed to the construction of five hospitals across the continent dedicated to treating heart diseases.
