Nigeria has announced its squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifiers, with matches set against Benin and Rwanda. This roster sees a return of key players as the Super Eagles aim to secure their place in the tournament with just one point needed from the remaining two games.
Following an eventful match against Libya, Nigeria’s national team will resume their campaign, facing Benin on November 14 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, and Rwanda on November 18 in Uyo, Nigeria.
Interim coach Augustine Eguavoen has selected a squad of 23 players, staying largely consistent with the previous lineup and reintroducing some familiar faces along with one new addition.
The list includes captain William Troost-Ekong, Ola Aina, Wilfred Ndidi, Victor Boniface, Moses Simon, Ademola Lookman, and Samuel Chukwueze, who all form the backbone of Nigeria’s campaign.
Key Returns Bolster Nigeria’s Lineup
The squad sees the much-anticipated return of star striker Victor Osimhen, who had been sidelined due to injury in October.
Osimhen’s return is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s attacking lineup, giving fans and teammates alike a renewed sense of optimism. Umar Sadiq also reclaims his spot on the team, making his comeback after being absent since late March.
In defense, there are some adjustments. Gabriel Osho, of Auxerre, is back in the squad, having previously been called up in March but without seeing game time.
This will be an opportunity for Osho to prove himself as he fills in for Benjamin Tanimu and Semi Ajayi, who are unavailable due to injuries.
Additionally, a new face, Victor Collins, will make his debut with the national team, adding depth to the defensive options.
Forward Taiwo Awoniyi and midfielder Chidera Ejuke, however, will sit out this round of qualifiers, marking a departure from their previous involvement with the squad.
One Point from AFCON Qualification
With 10 points already earned, largely due to a double victory over Libya — including one forfeit win after the incident at Al Abraq — Nigeria leads Group D and is now just one point away from securing qualification for the 2025 AFCON.
Their current standing puts the Super Eagles in a favorable position, with only a draw required to confirm their spot in the tournament.
“Our objective is clear,” Coach Eguavoen stated, reflecting on the team’s position and the stakes of the upcoming games. “We have the talent and the motivation; it’s about finishing strong.”
Fans eagerly await the November fixtures, hopeful that Nigeria will secure qualification without any last-minute surprises.
With the squad largely intact and Osimhen’s return adding firepower up front, the Super Eagles are poised for success in the decisive days ahead.
