Nigeria midfielder Christantus Uche to miss entire season after serious knee injury
Nigerian midfielder Christantus Uche will miss the entire 2026/27 season after suffering a serious right knee injury that requires surgery, Spanish La Liga club Getafe have confirmed.
The 22-year-old sustained the injury during a pre-season encounter against Monaco following a heavy challenge from defender Mawissa.
Subsequent medical examinations carried out by Getafe revealed significant damage to both the ligaments and menisci in Uche’s right knee, ruling him out for a prolonged period.
The Nigerian is expected to undergo surgery in the coming days, with Getafe set to provide further information about the procedure and his rehabilitation once the operation has been completed.
The injury comes as a major setback for Uche, who had been preparing for the new campaign with Getafe and was expected to play an important role for the Spanish side.
In an official statement, Getafe confirmed that the severity of the injury means the midfielder will be unavailable for the entire season.
“Following various medical tests performed on Christantus Uche over the past two days, it has been confirmed that he has a serious injury to his right knee. The player will undergo surgery soon; details will be announced in due course.
Due to the severity of the injury, it is estimated that the recovery period will be prolonged, so Christantus Uche will miss the entire season.
From Getafe CF, with its president, Ángel Torres, at the helm, we want to convey to our player all our affection, support and strength, knowing that he is an example of professionalism and effort and trusting that the recovery process will be completed satisfactorily, as we all hope.
The club will be by his side, accompanying him in every phase and making available to him all the necessary medical and human resources to face this stage in the best possible way.
Uche’s absence will represent a significant blow to Getafe as they prepare for the demands of the new La Liga campaign. The Nigerian had established himself as an important member of the squad and will now face a lengthy rehabilitation programme before he can return to competitive action.
The immediate priority for Uche will be to undergo the planned surgery and begin the rehabilitation process under the supervision of Getafe’s medical team.
While the exact recovery timeline will become clearer after the operation, the club’s confirmation that he will miss the entire season underlines the seriousness of the injury.
Getafe have also made it clear that they intend to provide Uche with the necessary medical and human support throughout his rehabilitation.
For the Nigerian midfielder, the focus will now shift from preparations for the new season to recovery, with the hope that he can make a full return to football after overcoming the lengthy setback.
