Nigerian football great Segun Odegbami has urged Morocco and the African football authorities to see Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations triumph as a positive outcome that ultimately protected the integrity of AFCON 2025.
Speaking in comments published by Soccernet, Odegbami argued that Senegal lifting the trophy helped shield both the host nation and the Confederation of African Football from damaging accusations following the controversy that surrounded the final in Rabat.
He noted that the outcome prevented doubts that could have overshadowed what he described as an otherwise successful and entertaining tournament.
The final was marred by tension after Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ndala awarded Morocco a stoppage-time penalty in the second half.
The decision sparked immediate protests from the Senegalese camp and heightened emotions inside the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
In response, Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw instructed his players to walk off the pitch in protest. The Lions of Teranga briefly left the field of play and made their way to the dressing room, following the coach’s directive as the situation escalated.
After several minutes of uncertainty, the Senegal players returned to the pitch, and the match was completed, bringing an end to a dramatic final that had the potential to dominate post-tournament discussions.
For Odegbami, Senegal’s eventual success ensured that the focus shifted back to football rather than controversy, preserving the credibility of the competition.
