Stephen Keshi Unfazed by Nigerian Football Federation Issues Ahead of Congo Clash
As Nigeria prepares to host Congo in a crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifier this Saturday in Calabar, Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi remains composed amid ongoing administrative turmoil within the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).
Addressing concerns about the off-field issues affecting Nigerian football, Keshi told CAFOnline.com that these matters will not distract him or his team. “These are purely administrative issues that have nothing to do with the team, with its game. It is not up to me to intervene in these matters. My job is the team, it is to give it the means to achieve the best performances,” the experienced coach said.
Keshi’s contract renewal remains unresolved, but he insists it is not affecting his focus or commitment. Reflecting on his intentions after the 2014 World Cup, Keshi admitted he was considering stepping down to pursue new challenges. However, he ultimately decided to stay, citing the passionate calls from his compatriots as a deciding factor. “I admit that after the World Cup I wanted to change, to go for a new challenge. But I received a lot of calls from my compatriots who almost begged me to stay. When you are approached like that, you have to know how to say yes sometimes.”
On the pitch, Nigeria faces a tough test against Claude Leroy’s Congo side, with both teams eager to kick off their qualification campaigns on a positive note.
Despite the administrative uncertainties, Keshi’s focus remains firmly on guiding the Super Eagles to success.
