Stephen Keshi Set to Extend Contract as Nigeria Prepares for AFCON Qualifiers
BBC Sport – African Football
Stephen Keshi is poised to extend his tenure as head coach of Nigeria’s national team, the Super Eagles, with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) reportedly set to offer him a new contract in the coming weeks.
A spokesperson for the NFF, Emeka Iyama, indicated optimism about finalising the deal soon. “We expect a signing next week so that he can resume work, with the upcoming qualifiers for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations,” he told the press.
Keshi, who has been at the helm since 2011, led Nigeria to victory in the 2013 African Cup of Nations and managed the team through the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Nigeria’s campaign in the World Cup ended in the round of 16 following a 2-0 defeat to France.
His current contract expired shortly after the tournament, but the federation’s confidence in his leadership remains strong. Keshi’s experience and success with the Super Eagles have made him a popular figure among players and fans alike.
Nigeria will kick off their 2015 AFCON qualifying campaign in September, drawn into a competitive group alongside South Africa, Sudan, and Rwanda. As reigning African champions, expectations are high for Keshi and his squad to secure qualification and defend their title in Morocco next year.
The impending contract extension is expected to provide the stability needed for Nigeria to build on their continental success and prepare effectively for the challenges ahead.
