Nigeria goalkeeper Maduka Okoye nominated for top award

Nigeria international Maduka Okoye has earned a prestigious nomination for the Serie A Player of the Month award for May following an impressive run of performances in goal for Udinese Calcio.

The goalkeeper, who has steadily grown into a key figure for the Italian side, enjoyed a remarkable month between the posts, producing a series of high-quality saves and commanding displays that helped stabilise Udinese’s defensive structure during a demanding run of fixtures.

Okoye’s form stood out not only for the consistency of his shot-stopping but also for his composure, decision-making, and leadership from the back. His performances proved crucial in securing valuable results, with his influence often proving decisive in tight encounters where Udinese were under sustained pressure.

Across the month, the Super Eagles goalkeeper recorded an impressive run of ten clean sheets, a statistic that highlights both his individual excellence and the defensive organisation he helped marshal. His ability to remain calm under pressure and deliver in key moments has further strengthened his reputation in Serie A.

The nomination places Okoye among an elite group of performers in Italy’s top flight, underlining the growing recognition of his contributions at club level. It also reflects his continued development since joining Udinese, where he has gradually established himself as a reliable and trusted presence in goal.

However, the Nigerian shot-stopper faces stiff competition for the monthly accolade, with several high-profile attackers and midfielders also shortlisted.

Among the nominees is Armand Laurienté of Sassuolo, who has been influential with his attacking output, while Donyell Malen of Roma has also been recognised for his impact in the final third.

Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martínez is also in contention after another prolific spell, alongside Lazio forward Tijjani Noslin and Juventus striker Dušan Vlahović, both of whom have enjoyed strong finishes to the campaign.

Despite competing against some of Serie A’s most dangerous attacking talents, Okoye’s nomination highlights the growing appreciation for defensive excellence in a league often dominated by forward players.

As voting and final assessments continue, the Udinese goalkeeper will be hoping his consistency, clean sheets, and commanding presence are enough to earn him one of the league’s top monthly honours.
