Nigeria international Chiamaka Nnadozie impresses on Women’s Super League debut.

Chiamaka Nnadozie marked her Women’s Super League debut with a standout display, helping Brighton and Hove Albion to a goalless draw against Aston Villa in their opening match of the season.

The Nigeria international, who joined Brighton this summer after leaving Paris FC, was one of two debutants in the starting line-up alongside Japanese defender Moeke Minami.

Both newcomers played key roles in ensuring Brighton began their campaign with a clean sheet.

Brighton controlled the first half, dominating possession and carving out several opportunities, but they were unable to convert.

Despite their territorial advantage, the score remained level at the break.

The pattern continued after the restart, with the Seagulls pressing forward, though Villa grew more compact and restricted Brighton to half-chances.

While Brighton struggled to find a breakthrough in attack, Nnadozie delivered at the other end.

The Super Falcons goalkeeper produced four important saves, demonstrating composure and command in her penalty area.

Her performance was recognised with a nomination for Brighton’s Player of the Match award.

Managerial reaction

Brighton head coach Dario Vidosic highlighted the defensive discipline shown by his team and praised their response to Villa’s counter-attacking threat.

We felt that it was coming our way. We knew there would probably be that moment for them in transition, I thought we dealt with it very, very well, he said.

We know how dangerous they are. Basically, any chance there’s a turnover, you’ve got two of the fastest players standing up top ready to hit you in behind. But I thought we dealt with their transitions really, really well.

Vidosic acknowledged Brighton’s lack of cutting edge in the final third but stressed the positives from an opening-day performance.

It was probably just that final pass that was missing, final decision. I think as it goes, round one, all that build-up for this week and then fatigue sets in. I was proud of the second half performance. I think both teams were trying to find their feet in that first half, calm the game down. Once we did then we looked quite good and in good patches in that second half, he added.

Looking ahead

The Seagulls will look to build on their defensive solidity when they face Manchester City in their next league fixture.

For Nnadozie, her commanding debut offered Brighton fans a glimpse of what she could bring across the season — a reliable presence in goal and a potential difference-maker in tight matches.
