Nigeria handed major boost as defender Michael Kayode left out of Italy squad

Nigeria have been handed a significant opening in their pursuit of Brentford right-back Michael Kayode after Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso excluded him from his latest squad.

The 21-year-old, long considered one of Italy’s brightest young defenders, is now weighing his international future following the omission.

Kayode was born in Borgomanero to Nigerian parents, making him eligible for both nations.

His progress through Italy’s youth system was impressive, capped by scoring the winning goal in the 2023 UEFA Under-19 Championship final against Portugal.

He also made his debut for the Under-21 side that same year and was later voted Italy’s Best Player Under 21 in 2024.

Despite such accolades, Gattuso overlooked him for Italy’s World Cup qualifiers against Estonia and Israel.

The coach instead favoured five Inter Milan players and other newcomers, even after injuries to key wingers Mattia Zaccagni and Matteo Politano left room for changes.

The omission has raised questions about Kayode’s place in Italy’s long-term plans.

Nigeria, however, are prepared to take advantage of the situation. Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle views Kayode as a strong candidate to bolster a depleted right-back position ahead of the World Cup playoffs against Gabon.

With Ola Aina sidelined by injury and Bright Osayi-Samuel still settling at Birmingham City, the team’s defensive depth is limited. Werder Bremen’s Felix Agu, another option, is also injured.

Kayode has adapted quickly to Premier League life since joining Brentford on loan in January 2025 before signing permanently five months later.

He has featured in all ten league matches this season and drew acclaim for his assured performance in Brentford’s 3–2 victory over Liverpool.

His mix of speed, discipline, and attacking energy has made him one of the league’s emerging defenders.

Nigeria are reportedly readying a formal approach that could see the defender file for a nationality switch.
