The government of Nigeria has delivered on its promise of housing and land to members of the Super Eagles following their runner-up finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.
Certificates for allocated plots and housing units were presented to the players at the team’s camp in Fes, Morocco, on Monday, according to Promise Efoghe, Media Officer for the national team.
Nigeria finished second at the 2023 tournament after a 2–1 loss to hosts Côte d’Ivoire in the final in January 2023. Upon their return, President Bola Tinubu hosted the squad at the Presidential Villa, conferring the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) on each player.
In addition, he approved a plot of land in the Federal Capital Territory and a residential flat for every squad member in recognition of their achievement.
Certificates were also presented as instruments of conferment of the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) by Sen. Abdul Ningi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, and Comptroller-General of Customs Bashir Adeniyi.
Speaking at the presentation, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau highlighted the significance of fulfilling the government’s pledges ahead of the team’s AFCON campaign.
“The president graciously promised houses and lands, as well as national honours, and today those promises are being fulfilled. There was no reason to begin another AFCON campaign without honouring that pledge. This shows seriousness and respect for the players,” Gusau said.
Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, emphasized the government’s determination to deliver on its promises before Nigeria’s first AFCON match, contrasting this with previous delays that took nearly 20 years to honour. “Whatever President Bola Tinubu promises, he delivers on time. This is about trust, motivation, and shared prosperity,” Dikko said.
The Super Eagles arrived in Fez on 18 December from their final training camp in Cairo and opened their Group C campaign against Tanzania with a 2-1 win.
